Transforming Adversity into Strength After 40 Years

Following more than four decades behind bars, Kevin found himself living on the streets for about two and a half months. During this time, he endured the harsh realities of homelessness, including theft and violence. After a brutal assault behind a local hospital, he realized he needed help. That’s when Jenn, a community health worker at Heartland Community Health Center, met with Kevin. He expressed his desire to enter a treatment recovery program to clean up his life.

Finding Support

With Jenn’s support, Kevin was taken to the emergency room for medical care, and shortly after, he was accepted into an Oxford House through a referral to community partner programs (Artists Helping the Homeless, Heartland RADAC, Bert Nash and KS Statewide Homeless Coalition). This marked the beginning of his journey toward healing. Kevin continues to work with his integrated support team. Heartland also provided Kevin with food through the Care Cupboard, access to same day and preventative medical care, coordinating specialty medical services, medication assistance and insurance eligibility.

Additionally, Jenn was able to secure a cellphone for Kevin through the Homeless Resource Center, which provides phones to individuals approved and actively working with a CHW or case manager. This phone has become a vital tool for Kevin as he navigates his recovery and stays connected with his support team.

“Every time I went over to Heartland, they’ve always helped me out, always looked out for me. They’ve got a food pantry back there, so I can always go and they’ll give me something. Jennifer and the team have been behind me 100% trying to get things done for me. From making sure I get food when I need it, to helping with my medical and dental care, they’ve always been there for me.” – Kevin

Taking Steps Forward

Determined to build a future, Kevin enrolled in a class called “Work for Success,” where he learned vital skills like resume writing and job interviewing. His efforts culminated in graduation from the program, an achievement that boosted his confidence and set him on the path to employment.

Over the last couple of months Kevin has worked as a cross guard and is currently volunteering at the Salvation Army with a goal to gain parttime employment there.

With the support of his CHW Jenn and partner teams he has been approved for his disability benefits and will now begin working on a plan to have an apartment of his own soon.

A New Beginning

Today, Kevin has secured a job at a local school and has received his Social Security benefits, marking significant milestones in his journey. With stable housing, he is finally able to escape the cycle of reliance on shelters and focus on building a life he can call his own.

Health and Well-Being

Health has also been a priority for Kevin. He has been working with his providers at Heartland to address various health issues, including a troubling nerve condition affecting his hand. Through regular appointments and open communication, Kevin is taking proactive steps to improve his overall well-being. Moreover, he has been transparent about his past with new therapists, sharing his life story and challenges in a calm and constructive manner. This openness is a significant step in his healing journey.

A Community Effort

Kevin’s story illustrates the vital role that community support plays in recovery. With dedicated individuals from organizations like Heartland, KS Statewide Homeless Coalition, Heartland RADAC, Artists Helping the Homeless, and Bert Nash, he has access to essential resources that can help him rebuild his life. They have not only assisted him with housing and employment but have also offered emotional support and encouragement throughout his journey.

Looking Ahead

As Kevin continues to work toward stability, he reflects on the obstacles he has faced and the lessons learned along the way. His past, marked by struggles and setbacks, has equipped him with a profound understanding of resilience. Kevin’s determination to move forward and his willingness to embrace help from his community highlight a hopeful path ahead.

Today, Kevin stands as a powerful reminder that, even in the darkest times, hope and recovery are possible. With a job, stable housing, and ongoing support, he is crafting a new chapter filled with promise and potential.
