New Beginnings: Anne’s Path of Hope & Healing

At age 60, Anne didn’t expect to be making new beginnings. But here she is, looking forward to putting up a Christmas tree for the first time in 15 years. “I’ve had so many bad memories around Christmas,” she explains. “But this year, I’m putting up my Christmas tree.” Her voice holds a mix of pride and joy—a symbol of healing that has been a long time coming.

Anne has been a patient at Heartland for a while now and says the center’s compassionate, holistic approach has been life-changing for her. “Heartland doesn’t just focus on your physical health, but your mental well-being too,” she shares. “They really care, and they make you feel that your health is their priority.” Through the integrated care model at Heartland, Anne receives both medical care and therapy in one supportive environment, making it easier to stay on top of her wellness needs.

It wasn’t always this way. For years, Anne struggled with chronic depression and PTSD, which left her in a constant cycle of feeling better, stopping her medications, then feeling worse. But with Heartland’s support, she’s been able to break that cycle. “I’m now completely compliant with my meds,” Anne says proudly. Her care team, which including her primary care provider/chronic condition specialist, and a dedicated therapist, has helped her establish consistency and self-care routines she once thought were out of reach.

This year has marked a significant milestone in her recovery. Working with her therapist, Anne tried a new therapy method called ART (Accelerated Resolution Therapy), which uses rapid eye movement to help process trauma.

Heartland has been there for Anne in more ways than one. They provided her with resources to support her sobriety, and today, she’s celebrating one year and 16 days of being alcohol-free. “They gave me the tools to make that first step,” she says, her voice filled with gratitude. For Anne, Heartland’s care has not only been about managing her physical and mental health but about helping her reclaim her life.

This weekend, Anne will unwrap her ornaments, string the lights, and decorate her tree—a long-awaited act of joy, hope, and healing. For Anne, this isn’t just a Christmas tree; it’s a testament to resilience and the possibility of finding peace, one holiday at a time.

Anne has suffered from chronic depression & PTSD for years. Watch how integrated care has helped her find her inner strength.
