Jim’s Transformation: How He Found Hope and Health
“I had lost my job. I had lost my insurance. I didn’t have any money, and I was sick,” Jim says. And I walked by Heartland many times. Then somebody said, ‘Why don’t you try Heartland?’ And I did.”
Jim had been living with unmanaged diabetes for years. “I’d had diabetes for 25 years. I wasn’t taking care of myself. I weighed over 400 pounds. My sugar was off the charts.”
That first visit marked a turning point. Lisa Russell DNP, NP-C, remembers meeting Jim. “He was very ill and just needed someone to care for him. I think people that are in that situation often feel very invisible. And he just needed someone to say, ‘We see you, and we’re gonna take care of you.’”
Jim says the experience was unlike any other. “They treated me like I mattered. It wasn’t just, ‘Next patient.’ They looked me in the eye. They were warm. They were kind. I wasn’t rushed through.”
Beyond his physical health, Jim also struggled emotionally. “I didn’t want to get out of bed sometimes. I was depressed. I was down. I was a mess,” he shares.
Seeing Alex, a behavioral health provider at Heartland, helped Jim navigate those feelings. “Talking to Alex helped me put things into perspective,” he says. “It made a big difference.”
With time, Jim saw major improvements in his health. “I’ve lost 100 pounds. My sugar is under control. I feel better.”
But for Jim, healing wasn’t just physical. “They helped me not only medically, but emotionally,” he says. “They helped me feel like a person again.”
“They cared. And it meant something.”
