When I first came I was just looking for physical health, and then I was welcomed by all the other services like psychiatry, behavioral therapy, the dentist, and then the new pharmacy.

A patient in their late teens who is an unaccompanied minor from Central America recently became a patient at Heartland. They had no known prior medical history, but said they did notice chest palpitations at times. During their physical exam, I noted a loud systolic murmur. The provider ordered Echo and EKG on this patient to evaluate the murmur, and both came back abnormal.

The Echo revealed a large septal defect in their heart. They were subsequently referred to Children’s Mercy Cardiology who recommended surgical intervention as soon as possible. They are now on the path to recovery and Heartland will so be able to continue their care including dental services.

Only 60% of children who are diagnosed with this defect survive and I am so grateful that that they were able to survive their journey to the United States and receive care from Heartland.

Heartland @ Panda Pediatrics

Best of Lawrence Pediatric Care

Panda Pediatrics provides quality and compassionate health care to all children & adolescents in Lawrence and surrounding areas – focusing on integrated, patient-centered care.

As part of the Heartland Community Health Center Family, Panda Pediatrics accepts all patients regardless of income or insurance status.

Safe places in general are really important in my life. And for a lot of people, especially people of color, having experiences, seeing my mom experience racism in a doctor's office, they didn't listen to her as a mother. They didn't think she knew what she was talking about when she was explaining what was happening, when her children were sick.

I really need places that can accommodate me, will listen to me.  I need somewhere safe for my kids to go. A place where people wouldn't judge what was happening in my life, and be able to help me grow and take care of my children properly.

And I definitely found that at Panda Pediatrics.

I started seeing a provider here. She helped me through depression and suicidal thoughts. She makes things make sense when my brain doesn't.

Knowing that I have a support system here that I didn't have in the outside world. I knew I could always come here and be safe.

Hannah

Heartland Patient

Hannah's Journey

Hannah’s mother took her to Panda Pediatrics throughout her childhood, and she loved the providers and care she received. When she became an adult, her mother was still her best friend.

In 2021, Hannah lost her mother from Covid-19. This had a devastating impact on Hannah, who suddenly had to navigate the world alone. She decided to choose Heartland Community Health Center for primary care. When she began to experience symptoms of depression, her provider suggested she meet with a mental health professional at Heartland.

Since beginning treatment for her depression at Heartland, Hannah’s life has transformed for the better. She is working full time, enjoying her hobbies, and most importantly she feels safe.

Building Bright Futures

Transforming Mental Healthcare Access

At Heartland Community Health Center, we recognize the pressing need for accessible mental health services. The demand for quality care has surged, affecting more than 4,000 patients in 2022 alone. Many, especially children, lacked ongoing psychiatric treatment, highlighting a crucial gap.

Access to Pediatric Psychiatry in Douglas County is very limited. With our ‘Building Bright Futures’ initiative, we’re answering this call.

Our expanded Psychiatry & Behavioral Health Services will introduce experienced professionals and a purpose-built facility. This space, designed for trauma-informed care, will address the community’s needs head-on.

Childhood is a canvas of boundless potential, where emotions and milestones paint the landscape of the future. Amid a world where young minds often face neglected mental health needs, we stand united to rewrite this narrative.

1 in 5 children in our community grapples with mental health challenges, often without adequate support.

Our Building Bright Futures campaign is a bold step towards change – a place where mental health takes precedence, offering solace to young souls and a lifeline to families seeking help. Regardless of income or insurance status.

Nurturing Tomorrow

Heartland is asking for support to construct a 8,000 square foot building located directly east of Heartland’s current building located at 1312 W. 6th St. The building includes designated spaces for a variety of services including individual therapy, play therapy, and psychiatric care suites, and a multipurpose room for group therapy and other programing.

The building will provide a trauma-informed space that embodies the organization’s mission to welcome all who need care.

By supporting Buildin Bright Futures, you’re part of a transformation that reaches beyond bricks and mortar. You’re contributing to a stronger, more resilient community where mental well-being knows no limits.
