Running for Life: Paula's Inspiring Journey to Overcome Knee Pain

Running is more than just a physical activity; it’s a way of life for many, and Paula Daoust embodies this spirit. At the age of 68, she had already conquered an impressive 150 half marathons, each covering 13.1 miles, including one in every state. Paula’s unwavering dedication to running was truly remarkable. However, when debilitating knee pain threatened to bring her running journey to a halt, she refused to give up. Her inspiring story serves as a powerful reminder that with determination and the right support, we can overcome even the most formidable challenges.

Paula’s running journey took an unexpected turn when she began to experience debilitating knee pain. Even simple tasks like going for a walk or shopping for more than ten minutes became excruciatingly painful for her. “To be able to run, I’d have to tape my knee, but I’d end up in a lot of pain afterward,” Paula recounted. The thought of not being able to run was devastating, so she tirelessly tried various methods to alleviate her suffering.

Paula’s perseverance led her on a five-year journey to cope with the pain, but it was a friend’s suggestion that ultimately changed the course of her life. Paula decided to seek help from an orthopedic physician, hoping to find a solution that would allow her to continue running. This is when she turned to LMH Health OrthoKansas for assistance.

In June 2021,  Paula received a partial knee replacement using a MAKO robotic arm, an instrument used to perform partial and total knee replacements, as well as total hip replacements.

After surgery and physical therapy, Paula’s knee pain is gone and she is well on her way to regaining her running form. She rejoined her husband for weekend races, participated in numerous half marathons since her surgery, and is steadily improving her race times, recently clocking in at 3:08 – just half an hour shy of her pre-surgery times.

Paula Daoust’s journey is an inspiring testament to the power of determination and the incredible impact of medical advancements. As she continues to conquer the running world, her story should serve as a source of inspiration for all. If Paula can overcome debilitating knee pain and return to running with passion and determination, what’s stopping you from running?
