Go Play Outside with Your Kids! (How to do it Safely)

As the weather warms up and the days grow longer, it’s the perfect time to embrace the great outdoors with your children! Here are some important tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience for the whole family.

☀️Sun Safety

With more time spent in the sun, it’s crucial to protect your children’s delicate skin from harmful UV rays. Remember to:

  • Apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and reapply every two hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating.
  • Dress your kids in lightweight, breathable clothing that covers their skin, and don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses for added protection.

🕷️Preventing Bug Bites

Bugs can be active in warmer weather, so take steps to prevent insect bites when spending time outdoors:

  • Use insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin on exposed skin and clothing, following product instructions carefully.
  • Dress your children in long sleeves and pants, and consider using permethrin-treated clothing for added protection.
  • Avoid areas with stagnant water, tall grass, or dense vegetation, where bugs like mosquitoes and ticks are more prevalent.

🤧Allergies vs. Colds

As allergy season coincides with outdoor adventures, it’s essential to recognize the difference between allergies and a common cold:

  • Allergy symptoms often include sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and a runny or stuffy nose, while cold symptoms may also include fever, sore throat, and body aches.
  • Treat allergies with antihistamines or nasal sprays, and consider allergy testing if symptoms persist or worsen.
