Dental Hygienists Make A Local Impact
Heartland Community Health Center is recognizing the important contributions of its dental hygienist during National Dental Hygienists Week, April 7 – 11.
In 2024, Heartland’s dental hygienists provided care during 11,414 patient visits for 6,927 individuals. Their work accounted for nearly $3 million in essential oral health services delivered to the community.
Dental hygienists play a key role in preventive care and patient education. At Heartland, they work with some of the most vulnerable populations – including children, new parents, and adults with complex medical needs. Their work includes oral health screenings, cleanings, nutritional counseling, and early intervention for conditions like periodontal disease.
Many hygienists also serve through Heartland’s Healthy Futures program, which brings diagnostic, preventive, and operative dental services directly to children at schools across the state of Kansas. This outreach ensures children receive care even if they face barriers to accessing a dental clinic.
Hygienists also support Heartland’s integrated care model by collaborating with primary care providers to address how oral health impacts overall health. For example, patients with diabetes receive targeted oral health education and treatment as part of their chronic disease management.
“Our hygienists are essential to the work we do,” said Dr. Mollie Day, Chief Dental Officer at Heartland. “From educating children about brushing and nutrition, to helping new parents with feeding techniques, to treating adults with complex conditions like diabetes, they’re improving both oral health and overall health every day.”
As the demand for accessible dental care continues to grow, Heartland’s dental team remains focused on delivering patient-centered care and expanding access to preventive services in both clinical and community settings.
