Understanding and Preventing SIDS: What Every Parent Should Know

October is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness and provide vital information to help protect our little ones. SIDS is the sudden, unexplained death of an otherwise healthy infant, typically during sleep, and is one of the leading causes of death in babies under one year old. While the exact cause of SIDS remains unknown, research has identified ways to significantly reduce the risk.

At Panda Pediatrics, we are committed to supporting parents with the knowledge and resources needed to keep their babies safe. Here are some key recommendations to help lower the risk of SIDS:

1. Create a Safe Sleep Environment

Always place your baby on their back to sleep, during naps and at night, on a firm mattress in a crib that meets safety standards. Remove soft bedding, pillows, toys, and blankets, which can obstruct breathing.

2. Room-Share, Don’t Bed-Share

While it’s beneficial to have your baby sleep in the same room as you, avoid sharing the same bed. Instead, keep a crib or bassinet nearby for safe and close sleep.

3. Breastfeed If Possible

Breastfeeding has been linked to a lower risk of SIDS. Even partial breastfeeding can provide protective benefits.

4. Avoid Overheating

Dress your baby in appropriate sleepwear and keep the room at a comfortable temperature. Overheating can increase the risk of SIDS.

5. Consider a Pacifier

Offering a pacifier at nap time and bedtime has been shown to reduce the risk of SIDS. If your baby isn’t interested in the pacifier, don’t force it.

6. Avoid Smoking and Secondhand Smoke

Exposure to smoke increases the risk of SIDS. Avoid smoking during pregnancy, and keep your home and car smoke-free after your baby is born.

7. Regular Pediatric Checkups

Stay on top of your baby’s wellness checkups. These visits allow your pediatrician to monitor your baby’s health, growth, and development while addressing any concerns.

At Panda Pediatrics, we’re here to answer your questions and provide guidance to help you create the safest possible environment for your baby. SIDS can be a difficult topic, but by following these safety tips, you can greatly reduce the risk and give your child the best start in life.
