Understanding IUDs: What You Need to Know

When it comes to preventing pregnancy, there are plenty of birth control options, but few are as reliable and long-lasting as intrauterine devices (IUDs). Considering an IUD but worried about the pain of insertion? You’re not alone. Many people have concerns about discomfort during the procedure, but the good news is there are ways to manage the pain. From local anesthetics to the benefits of long-lasting contraception, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about IUDs and the pain management options available. Whether you’re curious about the procedure, the different types of IUDs, or how long they last, this guide has you covered.

Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are a popular, long-lasting birth control option. They come in both hormonal and non-hormonal versions and can prevent pregnancy for years. However, many individuals shy away from considering an IUD due to concerns about pain during the insertion process. Jill Burgen, APRN, a Family Planning Provider at Heartland Community Health Center, is here to explain how IUDs work and how pain management during insertion can make the process much more comfortable.

Types of IUDs

There are two main types of IUDs: copper IUDs and hormonal IUDs. Both have a plastic frame shaped like a “T,” but they differ in the way they prevent pregnancy. The copper IUD, such as Paragard, is non-hormonal and prevents pregnancy through the copper’s inflammatory response, while hormonal IUDs, such as Mirena or Kyleena, release small amounts of progestin to prevent pregnancy by thickening cervical mucus and thinning the uterine lining.

“We have all of the IUDs here, hormonal and non-hormonal options, so the copper IUD and hormonal IUDs. These are great for pregnancy prevention, and they last a long time,” Jill explains.

The Benefits Beyond Birth Control

In addition to providing reliable pregnancy prevention, hormonal IUDs offer another key benefit: period management. “The hormonal IUDs can also be very helpful for period management, for stopping periods or lessening bleeding,” Jill shares. This makes them an attractive option for individuals who experience heavy or painful periods.

Pain Management During Insertion

A common concern about IUDs is the pain during insertion. However, Jill reassures patients that they don’t have to let fear of pain prevent them from considering this long-lasting contraceptive option. “If you’ve been afraid of getting one because you’re scared of the pain, we have really good news because we are offering pain management with insertion,” Jill says.

Heartland offers numbing options to make the process much more comfortable. “We offer lidocaine prior to inserting them, and that has been a real game changer for folks and made the procedure much more comfortable,” Jill explains.

Why IUDs Might Be the Right Choice for You

IUDs are one of the most effective forms of birth control available. They are 99% effective and can provide pregnancy protection for years, depending on the type. Additionally, they don’t require daily attention, unlike birth control pills or regular visits for shots. “IUDs are great because once they’re in place, you don’t have to worry about birth control until it’s time to replace it,” says Jill.

Whether you’re looking for an effective form of contraception or seeking a solution for heavy periods, an IUD may be the right option for you. With pain management options available to make the insertion process more comfortable, there’s no reason not to consider this long-term solution.
